Italy, 1985

In 1985 I spent 6 mos. in Italy, working for a bicycle racing and touring company. I did get to race too. I was in really good shape then. I was riding about 250 miles per week including doing some small mountains. We did train up one mountain pass of 1600 meters that took seven and a half hours round trip. We were headquartered at the foothills of the Dolomites in Treviso Province about 50 km. from Venice. We were in a small village of about 600 people. All were more than friendly; they embraced me as part of their community. I would love to go back when I get the chance. Soon.

That pic was taken right outside Pinarello’s shop (bicycle manufacturer & one of the sponsors of the 4 day race). We raced in Veneto (is where we were headquartered – been so long I forgot), Treviso, and once in Trento Province. I don’t think we were that close to Slovenia. My bodyfat was about 9% and, endurance cyclists are NOT fat. Those with a more stocky build usually race on the tracks (velodrome) in shorter but faster races. 😉

Yes, I felt some sorrow when leaving. I was there 6 months and the locals had embraced me and I was speaking (broken) Italian so that I could hang with the locals. I have good memories of my time there.

This, ovbiously, was during my hiatus from art. Actually, by the end of my time in Italy I knew I would retire from racing soon and was feeling the pull of art again.
