ala jawnbc: I can’t really remember what I was doing 20 yrs ago but I’ll give it a try.

I was living on a non-navigable boat moored in Miami’s Biscayne Bay with my bi-friend, Mark (aka Cavedog). Being October and end of the bike racing season I was probably gearing up for the last big race of the season. I was working at a bike shop within walking distance of the dingy docks. I was selling about $1000 of pot a week during this period. I liked having extra money and I had no rent, electric, or bills.

This period in my live was rather interesting in that I let my attraction to a roughneck take me by the scruff of my collar and I was stupidly devoted to him (and my sexual needs). He didn’t come out to the boat except when he wanted to but, he always showed up when he wanted money, which he got from me and his fat, but big tit (his attraction) girlfriend.

He was wearing thin on me and I developing a relationship with another bi guy who was a construction worker, iron worker. He, Richard, was attracted to me and let me know he was interested and we developed a pretty good relationship that lasted after Mark and I split.

Both of these guy were drinkers and drug users. Gawd, it broke my heart but, thank goodness, I’ve never been interested in using drugs. Mark got me started drinking (beer, rum, gin, whiskey) but, I don’t like beer. In 1984 while in Italy, I got to love wine.

In summation, this time was not about what I was doing but, what I had surrounded myself with: hot sexy bi men, cycling, and lots of freedom to do whatever I wanted. There was no art in my life at this time. I was on hiatus. 🙂

Cycle Fest, W. Palm Beach

I went up the W. Palm Bch. for a bike race today. I saw a bunch of old friends and made some new ones. I took a few pics but I didn’t post them yet. It’s too late tonight and my energy is low. I spent much of my time watching the race hanging out with a cop. Gawd, that man was fine! I would have taken pics but we were alone much of the time and it would be strange pointing a camera at him. Anyway, lots of lycra and bulges and shaved legs, that includes women although they bulge in different places. 🙂 One guy I took pics of a few weeks ago was there shirtless and handsome. I’ll have to post all the pics together in the next day or so.

I had fun. One of my photo students was there. The Univ. gallery dir. was there later eating with his family, not planning to see the race that whizzed by his outside table. I might return tomorrow for the last of the 3 days of events but, right now, I’m not sure as it’s a long drive.

Friday night I went to a museum opening of one of my MAeX sponsors: video and electronic media. It was really a great show. I’m thinking about writing a review, if I can make the time. My friend, David, said he would write something too. I’ll press him to get his pen out. I know I’ll have to edit it heavily as he never self-edits.

As I mentioned elsewhere, Miamiartexchange.com has a new calendar installed thanks to help from jam237. It’s working well and people are entering their own events and some events are being entered by my two volunteers. I’ll give them both some praise on the site for their wonderful job of keeping the calendar up-to-date.

Six Values

From the danlmarmot list, my six values:

Creativity
Effectiveness
Health
Self-realization
Spirituality
Wisdom

This list is similar to what I already have selected when I got my Franklin-Covey planner. My values haven’t changed much although I’m sure I need to have more emphasis on wealth. At this point in my life, the only way I can become wealthy (financially) is by inheritance (unknown relative), winning the lotto (doubtful), thief (even more doubtful), trickery (highly unlikely), extending my life expectancy (puhleeeze), or I could do the best I know how and keep my current values.

Edward Said Interview

“I was one of the first people in the Palestinian world, in the late 1970s, to say that there is no military option, either for us or for them, and I’m certainly the only well-known Arab who writes these things—and who writes exactly the same things in the Arab press that I say here.” Edward Said, in “Setting the Record Straight,” an Atlantic Monthly interview from 1999.

Hate

I’m hesitant to post this but for whatever it’s worth… I have arrived at my post office at the same time as this redneck looking white male about 50yr. The first time I remember seeing him was when he was riding a bicycle that had the shock forks recalled for being unsafe. I mentioned that he might check with a bike shop to make sure his forks were not recalled. It was probably not worth my effort because the bike was a cheapo.

Anyway, as we were both inside checking our boxes he began talking to himself. The way he did it was like talking to a third person that wasn’t there. He garbled much of what he said but he did want me to understand he didn’t like niggars and that they were the evil of the world. I just kind of ignored him as being a stupid redneck asshole. I guess he also felt it necessary to not talk directly to me for some reason but that is probably a good strategy for someone not knowing if the person they’re talking to is “packing heat.”

So, I just returned from the post office and he was there again today. I almost laughed out loud when he slyly pulled the door closed behind him so that I would have to open the door from being totally closed. Then he’s in the po boxes area mumbling to his invisible friend about how things would be better without, you know, niggars. He got into his open top Jeep and still mumbling. Of course, I left and went back to the studio.

I really feel sorry for a white racist living in S. Florida. This part of the U.S. is SO brown, and dark brown (and white) that everytime that guy opens his eyes he must feel his gut tighten into knots. Sad thing is at his age, he’ll probably die with his hate. So be it…

Late, but not forgotten…

Noted scholar Edward Said has died at the age of 67. “His writings have been translated into 26 languages and his most influential book, Orientalism (1978), was credited with forcing Westerners to re-examine their perceptions of the Islamic world. His works cover a plethora of other subjects, from English literature, his academic speciality, to music and culture.”

Busy…

I’ve been more busy than I expected of late. I got a phone call before the hurricane and again after from General Services Agency (U.S. Gov’t) saying that I had been requested to send slides of my work for a possible art-in-public places commission on a federal bldg. being planned up where I used to live. I was surprised to hear I had been specifically requested since I never get awarded those things and that someone actually felt my name should be on the list of artists reviewed. Once I actually spoke to the person in Wash., D.C., I had to overnight my work via FedEx (on their dollar).

Then, yesterday I met with someone I’ve recently met (an architect) who has asked me to be a curator for one of the centers he’s in charge of. And, it seems to be an interesting offer. I’m working on it.

I took a few new pics but, I’ll post some in a few days when I gather a good bunch. Patience, please… 🙂
